Suncoast Waldorf School Families Participate in Screen-Free Week
Suncoast Waldorf School is proud to officially endorse Screen-Free Week (April 30th – May 6th). During this annual celebration, children, families, schools and communities are encouraged to turn off screens and turn on life. In our modern society, children often spend far too much time with screens: an astonishing average of 32 hours per week for preschoolers and even more for older children. Excessive screen time is linked to poor school performance, childhood obesity, attention problems, and the erosion of creative play. Screen-Free Week is a wonderful way to help children lead healthier, happier lives by reducing dependence on entertainment screen media – including television, video games, computers and hand-held devices. By encouraging children and families to unplug, Screen-Free Week provides time for them to play, connect with nature, read, daydream, create, explore, and spend more time with family and friends. You can learn more about Screen-Free week here.
Although many of our families already strictly limit screen time for themselves and their children, they are encouraged this week to try a completely Screen-Free week. We are hoping to have close to 100% school participation. Activity logs are available in the school office to fill in with activities that families engage in instead of screen entertainment. Certificates of Achievement will be awarded to chlldren and/or families who are able to entertain themselves for 7 days without the use of screen technology. Join us and Enjoy!
